River Update 4-10-26
EBMUD and Fish & Wildlife are increasing flows from 300cfs to 1,800cfs from Thursday through Sunday in order to push Salmon Smolt down the river.
River Update 3-28-26
With flows down to 300cfs for the past couple of weeks both fishing & passage through exposed gravel bars has been challenging. When we do connect with fish, they are bright. big, and hard to land. With the river closing to fishing next Wednesday, it will be good to rest the river and the fish. I've seen more boats & rafts on the river fishing than I can ever remember. This is a small river that get impacted quickly with lots of fisherman. A shout-out to all my clients, friends, and family who fished with me since January 1st. Monday will total out at 28 days on the river for this old guide. Hope to see you in May.
River Update 3-17-26
With flows down to 300cfs on Sunday, March 15th, the water is really skinny, the fish are spooky, and I can see the effect of photosynthesis on the weed beds already. If you are floating or wading, be aware of your shadow and how you approach your fishing spot. We spooked a lot of fish on Tuesday.
River Update 2-19-26
With flows down to 350cfs since February 1st, I thought perhaps fishing would improve. Guides are averaging 1-3 good fish per day on flies. Somedays have only yielded Suckers and big Chub Minnows (Sacramento Pike). The Steelhead are still spawning so if you wade, keep an eye out for the Redds, It's also not cool to target fish on Redds. The water was pretty brown yesterday with limited visibility. With last night's rain, I expect a darker shade of brown and perhaps an increase in water release from Camanche Dam.
River Update 2-3-26
With flows down to 400cfs on Monday, the river seems to be returning to normal & fishing is improving.

Release Update
Flows are currently at 2,100cfs with a high probability that flows will increase this week. These conditions could sustain for the next two weeks.

On Wednesday, January 7 at 8:00AM increase release from 1,700cfs to 1,800cfs.
On Wednesday, January 7 at 12:00PM increase release from 1,900cfs to 2,000cfs.
On Wednesday, January 7 at 2:00PM increase release from 2,000cfs to 2,100cfs.
For safety reasons, EBMUD has closed the launch ramp at the Mokelume River Day Use Area (MRDUA).
There is litteraly no reason to try to fish the river at this time.
Happy New Year
I just returned from my annual trek to the MRDUA for the Opening Day on the Moke. I arrived at 6:30ish and the fine folks from the The Delta Fly Fishers Club had their awnings up and the coffee was a welcome treat in the pouring rain. I hung out and visited with lots of old and new friends until around 9:00AM. By that time five small rafts launched and a few individuals tried to wade at 1,300cfs and found that not working at all. I don't know how long this flow will be sustained so if you're thinking about floating the Moke, you should be at an Expert Level of rowing and reading water. If you are thinking about wading the Moke, that it is not safe at this time.
By the way, if you are thinking about fishing, January is sold out and I have a few dates left open in February. March has lots of dates open.
